Meet Our Troop!

Past SPL, Troop 637 from Sedalia, CO showing Troop flag up at Klondoree '02 where the temp dropped to -26 degrees below zero!!! This event made the cover of Boys Life.

We are proud to introduce you to Troop 637.  Started in February 1983.  We have grown to a troop of over forty boys. The older scouts are always very happy and willing to include the younger scouts. In our troop we all have fun together.

We wear our uniforms with pride and our troop does things the patrol way.  Our troop has five patrols so we have many fun patrol competitions and enough scouts to fill our duty rosters.

David Neely is our scoutmaster and he has several assistant scoutmasters to help him.  Gary Cherneski is our Outdoor Coordinator and Charles Walden is our Committee Chairperson.

Each of our patrols has a patrol parent to help guide our patrol leaders.  We have a senior patrol leader and each patrol also has assistant patrol leaders.

In our troop, as well as in our community, family is very important.  We are happy to have so many parents involved and we welcome the whole family in games, special activities and on camp out.

If you would like to talk us about our troop, please feel free to call our Scoutmaster, David Neely at (720)233-2374 or reach him at scoutmtroop637.org.

Troop 637 At-a-Glance

Air Force Family Campout Sept 01-Rope Bridge "Having a some fun climbing"]

There's always something fun happening with Troop 637.  We hold troop meetings every Tuesday night, except on holidays.  At these meetings our patrol leaders help us learn skills, work on merit badges, plan for camp outs and special events and we usually end by playing a really wild game.

We hold a Court of Honor every three months.  Scouts lead the program, boys receive the merit badges and rank advancement they have earned, and we end with a dessert potluck.

In our troop we are serious about camping.  Our bylaws stipulate that we camp out once a month and most of our camp outs are for two nights. We cook in patrols and we camp twelve months a year, rain, snow or shine.

Usually, our monthly meetings and the camp outs have a theme.  For example, one month our theme may be cooking.  At our weekly meetings we'll practice several cooking methods and recipes.  Then we'll combine a troop feast with our campout where we cook our best meals for the families in our troop.  The food is always great!

Summer and Fall are a special times for our troop.  We hold a number of  fund-raising activities, which help support our boys, by helping our troop purchase equipment and subsidize our campouts.  Some of our bigger events include selling pumpkins, sprinkler blowouts and participating in the Sedalia 4th of July festivities.

Check out our Calendar for a list of activities and outings we have planned for next year and our Upcoming Events section for an idea of what we're looking at doing for the next 7 years.

In Troop 637, every month brings you a great adventure, whether we're snowboarding, skiing, canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, hiking or camping!

Our Troop Is Boy-Led

We welcome anyone, whether you're already a boy scout, cub scout or just interesting in finding more about Boy Scouting and our troop to visit us.  When you do visit our troop, you'll find that the boys run the show.  Our Patrol Leaders run most of the troop meetings. Scouts rotate the positions of responsibility, serving as troop historian, bugler, scribe, guide, librarian, etc.

Our Patrol Leader Council is a very important part of our troop.  The PLC meets once a month and makes decisions about our troop activities.

Our PLC also sets the monthly themes for the year.  In the past some monthly features have been: OKPIK Winter Camping, Klondoree, Cave of the Winds (Caving), Sand Dunes National Monument, Summer Camps such as Tetons, SeaBase, Philmont, Mountain Biking, Troop Feasts and Wilderness Survival.

In Troop 637, our Scoutmaster, and our Troop Committee give us important guidance for making decisions.  Currently we are all working together to plan the next few years High Adventure Trips to Florida and Alaska.  The challenge of High Adventure is something all scouts look forward to!

With boys making the decisions, we have a really fun program, plus we all learn how to do the planning necessary to make our ideas happen successfully.

Our Troop Is Parent Enabled

Troop 637 is grateful to have a lot of really wonderful parents who like to help and participate.  Many of our parents have attended Scout leadership training.  In fact, in our troop, training is a requirement for parents who participate in our High Adventure activities.

We have an active, strong Troop Committee that handles our budget and fund-raising.  The committee also coordinates recruiting, advancement, communication, long-range planning and troop organization.

In our troop, parents have also filled positions as Advancement Advisors.  We have a New Scout advisor for scouts up to First Class, a Merit Badge Advisor for First Class scouts achieving Life and an Eagle advisor for our Life Scouts earning Eagle.  The coordination these parents have provided between our Scoutmaster, our scouts, and our Advancement Chairman is very helpful.  These advisors ensure that every scout has a ready and willing adult accessible when he needs one.

We are often asked how large we plan to let our troop get.  Parents are an important part of the answer to that question.  We want to be sure that parents of the scouts in our troop are eager to be involved, to participate, and that many of them are excited to become BSA trained and serve in leadership positions.

With the support of eager, active, trained and enthusiastic parents, there is no limit to where our troop can go!
